I'm Annika McDade, I am a Vancouver BC based professional, multi-certified dog trainer. It is my true passion to be a translator between humans and their dogs. So much is lost in translation and if we can just come to understand what each of us want and communicate clearly, we can have a relationship built off of trust and fun.
Why Sniffdog?
Sniffdog is a passion project. We are taking dog training online to try to help as many people as we can achieve a healthy and fun relationship with their pet.
Getting a dog is a stressful experience. Online is littered with so much content. It's hard to decipher what's helpful, and what's not. At Sniffdog, we are here for you. We're gonna give you product reviews, honest ones. We're gonna provide you actionable content, whether it's through videos, these really awesome training tip sheets that we put together for you guys to take your homework home. We're also going to be giving you guys, eventually, memberships and online courses.
At Sniffdog, we are using positive reinforcement training methods. This is an unregulated industry. It is my true, true passion and belief that we do not have to employ the use of fear inducing, intimidation based or leadership based training methods. We will be using treats and praise and our relationship to reward our dogs.
None of the content that you see here will be correction based. We don't need to hurt our dogs to have a healthy relationship with them, and we do not need to scare our dogs to have their respect. In fact, you will find that we will gain much more respect from them in doing it the fun way.
Meet Cedar!
So soon, you will meet Cedar, my new best friend. I am going to come on this dog training journey with you. And that means sleepless nights, ripped clothes and poop on my floor.
About Annika McDade
Dog training sort of just came to me. I was instinctively, always drawn to dogs. I wanted a dog my entire life. I asked for them every Christmas, every birthday, every holiday. I did everything I could to try to make my home a home that had dogs in it. And when that wasn't available to me, I turned 18 and I got two Huskies.
As I grew up and I tried multiple other career options, including a career as a weekend morning show host on the radio, it became ever so clear to me that working with animals was totally possible as a professional career and was my true calling.
As I began to explore what it might take or look like to become a professional certified dog trainer, I took four different certification programs. Obviously education is important to me. I needed to make sure that I was providing up-to-date and science based content. This is an unregulated industry, and unfortunately that means many people can go out there and call themselves dog trainers. It was important to me that I did it the right way and with integrity.
So four certifications certainly gave me enough confidence to officially open a business and call myself a dog trainer. Somewhere along the lines, I was invited to come move to China and train wolves with professional animal trainers for film. I learned from some very, very talented mentors and the learning experience truly came from sitting in a pen with 19 to 22 wolves that we couldn't exactly touch. We had to convince them to come and listen to us and do what we wanted them to do without actually being able to touch them.
When you add in a little bit of fear and adrenaline to that, and a lot of intimidation when you're working amongst the best of the best of the animal trainers in film, it was a very stressful scenario, but I learned in silence and gaining their trust and showing up every day, time and time again and not letting them see that I was too afraid of them. It became a really rewarding relationship and we were able to achieve our training goals with these barely domesticated, almost wild animals. And it was through time, consistency, commitment, patience, and it all boiled down to trust. And that is the biggest lesson I bring into my training with dogs here today. Stay Tuned!
